The Role of a Dietitian
Registered dietitians are the only qualified health professionals that educate, assess, diagnose and treat nutritional and dietary problems at an individual and wider public level, working with healthy and unwell people.
Uniquely dietitians use the most up to date nutrition and dietetic evidence base and scientific research on food, health and disease which they translate into practical advice to enable people to make appropriate food and lifestyle choices, to improve health and treat diseases/conditions.
Education and personalised advice is provided to patients, clients, carers, colleagues and the general population.
Dietitians are the only nutritional professionals to be regulated by law and governed by an ethical code to ensure that they always work to the highest standard.
Dietitians work in the NHS, private practice, education, research, industry, media, public relations, sport, publishing, government and non-government organisations.
Only those registered with the statutory regulator, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) can use the title of dietitian/registered dietitian (RD).
